About Poreč

City full of history

The beauties of Poreč are visited by guests from all over the world who enjoy the hospitality and top service for which this Istrian gem is known. If you look carefully, you'll see the remains of ancient Rome in the 2,000-year-old, stone-paved Decumanus Street, Marafor Square, and the ruins of the Temples of Neptune and Mars. In the harbor you will find evidence of Venetian rule from the 18th century, when Poreč was ruled by Napoleon and the Habsburgs. In the 15th century, the Venetians built a city wall that stretched from the round tower (now a bar) to the inner Pentagonal tower (now a restaurant).

Euphrasian Basilica and Bishop's Palace (UNESCO heritage)

Spending a day in Poreč means getting to know its history, starting with the famous Euphrasian Basilica from the 6th century, built by the bishop of the same name and an important surviving example of Byzantine art. The surroundings are full of interesting things that you can visit in 20 minutes, and if you're in the mood, you can spend hours enjoying the works of the past. The main attractions are the perfectly preserved gilded and mother-of-pearl mosaics, as bright as the day they were created. The largest and most beautiful mosaic is in the apse above and behind the altar and shows a procession of angels around the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus. The Euphrasian Basilica was built on the foundations of a three-nave church from the 5th century, parts of which are still visible in the floor mosaics of the northern nave. There is also an eight-sided baptistery, and you can climb behind the bell tower and enjoy the view of the sea. If you like mosaics, be sure to check out the ones located in the former bishop's palace.

Beaches in Poreč
